Using health assessment tools

The method selected to support someone from the floor after a fall will impact the time spent on the ground.  Clinical evidence shows that there are a considerable number of complications that can ensue from lying on the floor for a long period of time, for example, pressure sores (often exacerbated by unavoidable incontinence), carpet burns, dehydration, hypothermia, pneumonia, and even death.  The impact will begin to have an affect on health after just 10 minutes, so prompt action is very important.

We are also acutely aware that a fall can result in post- fall syndrome that includes confusion, dependence, loss of autonomy, immobilization and increased mental health issues, including depression, which will lead to a further reduction in carrying out daily activities.

NHS Ambulance Services in the UK use a health assessment tool called ISTUMBLE, which gives the emergency service worker or caregiver a check list to perform to help them make good decisions around lift assists.
